NOSTALGIC PICTURE BOOK

The very welcome sight of Seán Curtin's latest annual publication is now on the shelves of local bookshops. Yes indeed, number 23 of that famous series entitled, “Limerick – A Stroll Down Memory Lane” has graced our outlets for a few weeks now, a firm fixture for over two decades and proving extremely popular for people at home and abroad. A most wonderful picture of the St. John's by Dermot Hurley, poses on the front cover of what proves to be a delightful visual treasure trove of pure nostalgic pleasure. While, on the back cover we view the Knights of Malta marching down O'Connell Street in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in 1960, and we get a glimpse of one of the first Supermarkets that of 'Five Star' in the background. Quite superb the entire publication is. A spectacular coloured picture of the Corbally Baths will certainly evoke many happy memories for our Parish folk. Also, there is a superb picture of St. Mary's School Choir in there from 1950, including Mae Clancy and myself. Well done to Seán for keeping these past images of the city alive! You may capture the said man at the Market on ant Saturday vending his books. The ideal Christmas for anyone.
MAE AT DAWN

It was precisely 6.15am on Thursday morning last that our Parish writer and broadcaster, made her audio appearance, but Mae Leonard's dulcet tone is welcome any time of the day or even night! On RTE Radio One, 'A Word in Edgeways' we heard an account of our writer actually 'springing into life.' Her father, Leo Clancy, rolling his bike bearing a packed brown suitcase. He was en route to the Hospital or Nursing Home in semi-darkness, with wife, Nellie trying her best to keep up with him. It was a World War Two time-frame, 1941, and our Mae was about to be born! I cannot say, oh yes, I remember it well, as I was but three months old! Once again, well done to Mae, always interesting and forever 'on deck!'
