PRIDE OF PLACE
We must not let this special Parish year exit without keeping in mind its great significance, the 200th anniversary of Athlunkard Street. What a wonderful occasion that was back in late April. Everything went off perfectly and the highlight of course was the launch of 'The Story of Athlunkard Street 1824-2024' by local scribe, Denis O'Shaughnessy. In a very short time this local literary treasure had all but disappeared and now remains somewhat of an item of value! Just try to get hold of a copy and you'll find out. Few parishes in the city have retained its sense of place and loyalty as ours has. In the piece cited below, this fact became evident to a total stranger to the.
A VALUED OBSERVER
'Thanks to all and they are many, who in any way contributed to the wondeful success of the week of festivities commemorating the 200th anniversary of the opening of Athlunkard Street in 1824. It was a renewal of acquaintanceship for family and friends and the large attendance at all events was proof positive of the pride that still exists in the heritage of the street that many love so well. The best compliment I heard was of an American man in the Killaloe Male Voice Choir, who said, of all the concerts he had sang over the years that he is in Ireland, he never sensed such a pride in an audience about their native place, It truly was you, the people, who made the celebrations such a success! On behalf of the organizational group. Go raibh maith agaibh.' (Church Newsletter May 5th, 2024))
