KILKEE MOVIE:
Great news on the Kilkee front! Beginning towards the end of July a group of actors from Germany will descend on Kilkee to participate in a movie called “Clueless.” It relates the story of a lady who finds herself landed in the said spot, and hasn't a clue where she is. The movie promises to portray Kilkee in all its pristine glory and the director will also visit Kilrush and Ennis town briefly. It seems that a fleet of people involved in the movie will be staying in Kilkee for quite a few weeks. This is going to be an exciting time for our beloved seaside resort, particularly in light of the fact that it got little chance to spring into life for the summer thus far.
KILKEE FOR DIVING BEST IN EUROPE:
Jaques Cousteau (1910-1997) rated Kilkee Bay as the best diving location in Europe, and among the top five in the world. Kilkee officially gained the status of Town in 1901.
JANE EYRE IN KILKEE:
As many Limerick people will be well aware, the great 19th century novelist, Charlotte Bronte, spent part of her honeymoon in the delightful seaside village (that was its status then) of Kilkee back in the year 1854. Unfortunately, she passed away less than two years into her marriage. In her memory, the film ‘Jane Eyre’ was shown at the Culturlann Sweeney Library last year and I was delighted to be in a position to attend with a friend of mine, along with many more avid film-goers.
BAKE HOUSE 22:
Well done to Michael and Shelagh Treacy of bake House 22 on Nicholas Street who have been trading throughout the pandemic, having a 'Take Away' food outlet on the premises. It has proved extremely convenient to many a person during that restrictive period of time. It was certainly a case of “Alone It Stands”! With not a peep from any other outlet in that area (of necessity, of course).
KING JOHN'S CASTLE:
What a terrible pity it will be if our finest tourist attribute is to close for the Autumn! After all, apart from its own outstanding magnetic attractive aura, it is the cause of bringing added life to that ever silent street, that is Nicholas Street. One wonders what the thinking behind this decision might be.
BOAT RACING MEMORIES:
A Marathon Boat Race took place back in 1951 and the following is a recording of it. ‘This event proved a very popular venture, and promises to become one of the highlights in Limerick's sporting calendar. The race was followed by a huge crowd from start to finish, but the real excitement started when the crews attempted to pole up the Curraghgower Falls at low tide. It seemed impossible, each crew in turn tried and it was apparent that the long race round the parish had taken a lot out of them. The public certainly enjoyed the fun as boats were overturned and swept back time and again. Cameras were busy and supporters were up to their knees in water to urge their sides. After a long tussle, in which only two crews finished the result was as follows:- 1st, B. Kinsella, D. Sheehan, W. Lysaght; 2nd, M. Hogan, D. O'Shaughnessy, D.
