SUCCESS FOR ASM

Congratulations to Ardscoil Mhuire's Concern Debates team on winning their most recent debate against Mungret Community College by unanimous decision. The team faced the tricky task of opposing a motion that suggested an end to world hunger was impossible. They rose to this challenge magnificently, coming up with a unique response to the motion and supporting each other through the research, writing, and rehearsal of their speeches. The feedback from their adjudicators praised their creativity, confidence, and ability to communicate. Ardscoil Mhuire is extremely proud of Katlyn (captain), Abbie, Emma, Molly, and Christine, as well as the entire team, for their excellent displays of dedication and teamwork.

LIBRARY OPEN

Following a necessary closure for a rather lengthy period of time, it is good to see that our city library has become vibrant once again over the past few months. It is now situated at the corner of Michael Street and the extension of Ellen Street, and is a very welcoming and comfortable enclosure. What an amount of planning and hard work that transition must have entailed!
ATHLUNKARD ORNATE GATES

We've been passing them for decades, the ornate gates that lead to that ancient Athlunkard Boat Club est. 1898. And, it seems they have not gone unnoticed by the two men who have compiled a comprehensive, yet it is a reader-friendly book, entitled, “Limerick: Snapshots of the Treaty City and County 1840 – 1960,” Tom Donovan and Vincent Carmody. Anyone who has already had access to this literary and historical treasure, will immediately ascertain at a glance that it was not compiled in the wink of an eye, but rather, may have taken years in the planning, leading to its eventual masterful publication.

However, it is page 193 of this tome that I wish to draw readers attention to. Here, we are treated to, not alone a picture in colour of these unique gates, but to an individual picture of the four aspects that adorn the said gates., the Treaty Stone, the Round Tower, the Maid of Erin, and the Portcullis Gate to Castle. You will find this magnificent treasure in many bookshops. I purchased mine at Quay Books, a little literary nugget, situated on Sarsfield Street around the corner from Billy Higgin's shop.
